For the better part of two decades, Gavin Lurssen has focused his energies on learning the importance of signal flow: cleaning the chain of unnecessary electronics and amplifiers, digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital technology, and gain structure. These and other sensitivities have been built into the Lurssen Mastering, Inc. studios to create an environment in which the engineer’s response to any particular style of music is matched with the appropriate equipment needed to get the job done.
The studio's electronics path has been carefully connected, serviced, and approved by legendary Los Angeles technician Charlie Bolois. We use state-of-the-art and highly modified solid state and tube audio processing equipment. All processing is done in the analog domain. Digital programs used to capture and to playback include Sonic Studio and Pro Tools (among others).
Gavin's third Grammy came in 2009 for mastering the album "Raising Sand," performed by Robert Plant and Alisson Kraus and produced by T Bone Burnett, which won the Album of the Year category. In 2002 he received a Grammy for the "O Brother Where Art Thou?" album which won in the same category. Gavin also won in 2004 in the Best Historical Album category for his work on the box set that accompanied the PBS television series, "Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues." Raising Sand also won Gavin and Lurssen Mastering, Inc. two TEC awards in 2008 for outstanding facility and for mastering.
The entire Lurssen Mastering, Inc. team has also been active over the last several years servicing and supporting independent artists. At this time of transition in our industry, we understand that the emerging independent music scene is a driving force and we are thrilled to participate in it.
The mastering studio's primary occupants are principal Gavin Lurssen, mastering engineers Gabriel Wallach and Reuben Cohen, and studio manager Kaitlin Gladen. We pride ourselves in efficiency and unrivaled world-class client service.
We believe in balance: as a way to live life and a way to conduct business. Balance applies to everything and in mastering nothing could be truer. Balanced and competitive audio is what Lurssen Mastering, Inc. provides to all of our clients.
We are proud of the fact that six albums we worked on in 2009 won Grammy's and two songs - The Weary Kind from "Crazy Heart" and Up won Oscars.
